A health system gave 200 clinic managers self-serve analytics without an IT ticket

A multi-site health system deployed D23 in its own Azure VPC and gave clinic managers access to operational dashboards — no SQL knowledge needed.

The challenge

Two hundred clinic managers across the network needed operational reports — patient volumes, wait times, staff utilization, no-show rates — but every data request went through a two-person BI team that was already backlogged three weeks. Managers were making scheduling decisions on month-old data, and the BI team could not keep up with the volume of one-off requests.

How D23 helped

  • Deployed D23 managed Superset inside the health system's existing Azure VPC to satisfy HIPAA data-residency requirements.
  • Connected the clinical data warehouse (Azure Synapse) and the scheduling system (Postgres) as data sources.
  • Built a library of 40+ operational dashboard templates that clinic managers can filter and slice without writing SQL.
  • Enabled AI text-to-SQL for power users, with a curated allow-list of tables to prevent access to raw PHI.
  • Integrated with the health system's existing Azure AD SSO so managers log in with their hospital credentials.
Clinic managers used to wait three weeks to find out last month's no-show rate. Now they check it themselves every morning. The BI team can finally focus on strategic work instead of fielding the same report requests over and over.
